Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that Nigerians have no reason to be poor, considering the nation’s abundant natural and human resources. He made the remark during a dinner held in his honour by the Abia State Government on Friday at the Government House in Umuahia.
Obasanjo emphasized that God has blessed Nigeria with everything it needs to thrive, but mismanagement and poor leadership have kept the country in economic distress. “Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us all that we need. If we are mismanaging what God has given us, we do not have God to blame; we have ourselves to blame,” he said.
The former president lamented the state of governance in the country, pointing out that the wealth of Nigeria continues to be concentrated in the hands of a few, while the majority struggle to survive. He stressed that true development can only be achieved when leaders prioritize accountability and equitable distribution of resources.
Obasanjo’s comments come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with rising inflation, unemployment, and economic hardship. His remarks have reignited conversations around the need for structural reforms and responsible governance to lift millions out of poverty.
