The political landscape of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been marked by significant legal confrontations between current Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and his predecessor, Mojisola Meranda. Following his impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations including fraud and abuse of office, Obasa has initiated legal proceedings challenging the legitimacy of his removal and Meranda’s subsequent appointment as Speaker.
In a recent development, Obasa filed a lawsuit against Meranda, accusing her of corruption and seeking the removal of her designation as a former Speaker. The case, presented at the Ikeja High Court, includes additional fraud allegations against Meranda, as outlined in fresh affidavits submitted by Obasa’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afolabi Fasanu.
During the court proceedings, Meranda’s counsel, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), requested an adjournment to adequately address the new allegations. Consequently, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro adjourned the hearing to March 17, 2025, allowing both parties time to prepare for the subsequent legal discourse.
This legal tussle underscores the internal conflicts within the Lagos State House of Assembly, reflecting the complexities and challenges in its leadership dynamics. As the case progresses, it is anticipated that further insights into the allegations and the Assembly’s governance will emerge, potentially influencing the political trajectory of Lagos State.
