Obama Blasts Trump’s ‘Treason’ Claim Over 2016 Election as “Bizarre and Ridiculous”.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has sharply condemned Donald Trump’s recent accusation of “treason” related to the 2016 election, calling the claims “bizarre,” “ridiculous,” and “a weak attempt at distraction.” In a rare direct response, Obama’s spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, issued a public statement dismissing Trump’s remarks as baseless and dangerous. “We typically don’t respond to the former president’s constant stream of misinformation,” Rodenbush said, “but this latest accusation is so egregious and detached from reality that it requires a firm response.”

Trump had made the explosive allegation during a press conference on July 22, 2025, claiming that Obama led a coordinated effort to tie his 2016 presidential campaign to Russian interference. Trump labeled it a “coup” and insisted Obama should face legal consequences. However, multiple investigations over the years—including a 2020 bipartisan Senate report—concluded that while Russia attempted to influence the 2016 election in Trump’s favor, there was no evidence of vote manipulation or criminal conspiracy orchestrated by Obama or his administration.

Rodenbush stressed that the newly declassified documents Trump and Tulsi Gabbard referenced did not contradict those earlier findings. Instead, he said they were being “cherry-picked and misrepresented” to suit a political narrative. The Obama camp suggested the treason claim was a calculated distraction, coinciding with growing calls for transparency around Trump’s handling of Jeffrey Epstein–related documents. Analysts agree the timing appears strategic, noting that Trump has faced mounting pressure from both political allies and critics over sealed Epstein files.

The heated exchange has further widened the already deep political divide in the United States. Legal experts warn that recklessly invoking “treason”—a term constitutionally defined and rarely applicable—undermines the seriousness of public discourse and weaponizes fear. While Obama has largely remained above partisan conflict since leaving office, his team’s decision to respond directly signals the gravity with which they view Trump’s remarks. As the 2024 election nears, tensions between both camps appear poised to intensify even further.
