On Friday, March 7, 2025, Nigeria’s national electricity grid experienced its second disturbance of the year, leading to widespread power outages across various regions, including Lagos. The system disturbance occurred at approximately 2:00 PM, as confirmed by major electricity distribution companies.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) acknowledged the outage, stating: “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 07/03/2025 @ 14:00 hrs, affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
This incident follows a previous system disturbance on February 12, 2025, when the grid experienced a similar outage at 11:34 AM. The recurring disturbances have sparked discussions among stakeholders about the need for structural reforms within the power sector. Some experts advocate for decentralizing the national grid into smaller, more manageable units to enhance stability and efficiency.
As of now, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the latest disturbance. Efforts are underway to restore power, and consumers are advised to remain patient as the situation is being addressed.
