Nigeria’s D’Tigress Make History with Fifth Consecutive Women’s AfroBasket Title.

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have made history as the first team ever to win five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles. The historic feat was sealed with a 78-64 victory over Mali in the 2025 final, held in Kigali, Rwanda. Despite trailing 26-21 after the first quarter, the defending champions mounted a dominant comeback to secure yet another crown and extend their unbeaten continental streak to 29 games since 2015.

The final was a showcase of skill, resilience, and teamwork. Amy Okonkwo delivered a stellar performance with 19 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field, including four three-pointers. Ezinne Kalu, the team’s captain and experienced playmaker, led all scorers with 20 points, while Victoria Macaulay added crucial baskets and defensive presence. Together, the trio contributed nearly half of Nigeria’s total points, setting the tone for the rest of the team.

D’Tigress’ style of play was marked by fluid ball movement, ending the game with 24 assists—eight more than Mali—reflecting their unselfish approach and deep roster strength. The victory was not just about skill but also mental toughness, as the team kept their composure despite an early Mali surge.

This achievement adds to an already impressive record for D’Tigress, who have now dominated African women’s basketball for a decade. Since reclaiming the AfroBasket title in 2017, they have not lost a game on the continent, creating a legacy that will inspire generations of Nigerian basketball players.

Beyond the trophy, the win carries significant rewards. Nigeria has secured automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, setting the stage for another opportunity to test themselves against the world’s best. With their current momentum, depth, and experienced core, the team will enter the global stage as a formidable force.

The historic fifth consecutive title is a testament to the vision of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, the dedication of the coaching staff, and the unwavering commitment of the players. It’s a victory that cements D’Tigress’ place not only in African basketball history but also in the wider conversation of global women’s sports excellence.
