Niger Governor Reverses Dreadlocks Ban After Public Backlash.

Niger State Governor Umar Bago has reversed his controversial directive ordering the arrest and forced haircut of individuals wearing dreadlocks, following widespread public outcry and criticism from civil society groups, social media commentators, and human rights advocates.

The initial directive, announced on April 22, 2025, was part of a broader security crackdown in Minna, the state capital, aimed at curbing rising gang violence. Governor Bago had instructed security agencies to arrest anyone with dreadlocks, shave their hair, and impose fines, asserting that such appearances were linked to criminal activity.

The policy sparked immediate backlash, with critics arguing that it unfairly targeted individuals based on appearance and violated personal freedoms. Social media activist Martins Otse, known as Verydarkman, condemned the directive as discriminatory and called for an apology from the governor.

In response to the mounting criticism, Governor Bago rescinded the order, acknowledging the concerns raised by the public and emphasizing his commitment to upholding citizens’ rights while maintaining security.

This incident underscores the delicate balance between implementing security measures and respecting individual rights, highlighting the importance of inclusive and rights-based approaches to governance.
