Nationwide power outage as national grid collapses third time in a week

A transformer explosion at the Jebba Transmission Substation caused the National Power Grid to collapse for the third time on Saturday, resulting in a nationwide power outage that lasted for several hours.

The collapse took place at 8:15 a.m., following two grid failures that occurred last Monday.

Nairametrics’ investigation showed that the grid was delivering 0 megawatts to the eleven distribution companies (DisCos) across the country.

This is the eighth grid failure in 2024, with three occurring in the past week alone.

As of the time of reporting, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which oversees the national grid, has not yet issued a statement addressing the most recent collapse.

Meanwhile, Nairametrics noted that several states are still without power, as the grid’s failure to transmit electricity has plunged households and businesses into total darkness.
