The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the use of “Nivea Black & White Invisible” roll-on deodorant, manufactured by Beiersdorf AG, Germany.
This follows an alert from the European Union’s RAPEX system, which flagged the product for containing 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a substance known for causing skin irritation and potential reproductive health risks, including risks to unborn children.
NAFDAC advised consumers, importers, and retailers to immediately discontinue the sale and use of this deodorant and to return existing stock to the nearest NAFDAC office for inspection,
The deodorant, part of the Nivea “Black & White” series designed to prevent clothing stains, was intended for wide distribution and daily use. However, the European Union classified BMHCA as a harmful chemical that should not be present in cosmetics due to its potential health effects.
NAFDAC’s notice encourages the public to exercise caution and ensure that harmful or recalled products do not circulate in Nigeria. The agency emphasized that individuals and businesses should remain vigilant, highlighting the importance of health and safety within the supply chain.
In addition to halting usage, NAFDAC calls on consumers and healthcare professionals to report any adverse reactions linked to the product. Users experiencing any symptoms, such as skin irritation or other adverse effects, can report these to NAFDAC’s offices or via online platforms designed for e-reporting.
