NAFDAC Destroys N120 Billion Worth of Counterfeit Products in Six Months.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the destruction of seized counterfeit and substandard products valued at N120 billion in the last six months. The agency disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the action is part of its intensified efforts to combat the circulation of harmful products across Nigeria.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the destroyed items included expired drugs, unregistered processed foods, cosmetics, and substandard medical devices. She emphasized that these products posed significant risks to public health and safety, prompting their removal from the market. The agency’s activities involved rigorous inspections, surveillance, and enforcement operations nationwide.

Prof. Adeyeye attributed the success to collaborations with other regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders. She revealed that the agency had also intercepted multiple consignments of fake products at major ports and borders, preventing their distribution. Additionally, she commended whistleblowers and the public for providing timely information that led to several busts.

The NAFDAC boss reiterated the agency’s commitment to zero tolerance for counterfeit products, urging manufacturers and importers to comply with regulatory standards. She warned that the agency would continue to prosecute offenders to serve as a deterrent to others. Prof. Adeyeye also called for increased awareness among consumers to help identify and report suspicious products.

In conclusion, NAFDAC reaffirmed its resolve to ensure the safety of Nigerians through sustained regulatory actions. The agency urged all stakeholders to join the fight against counterfeit and substandard products, promising a safer market environment for consumers and legitimate businesses.
