At only 15 years old, Stephanie Onusiriuka is making significant waves in the gymnastics world. Her journey into the sport began at the tender age of two, showcasing her extraordinary knack for flipping and tumbling while her peers were just mastering the art of walking. Recognizing her exceptional talent, her parents ensured she received the necessary guidance, enrolling her in professional gymnastics training at just seven years old.

This early commitment rapidly propelled Onusiriuka into the limelight. By eight, she celebrated her first international success, clinching a gold medal in South Africa and announcing her potential as a star of the future. At eleven, she solidified her status in Nigerian sports history with an impressive showing at the National Sports Festival in Edo, winning a set of medals that included one gold, two silver, and one bronze, declaring her a formidable competitor in gymnastics.

Her achievements didn’t stop there. A standout performance at the African Gymnastic Club Members competition in Pretoria further reinforced her reputation, as she earned another gold medal, taking pride in representing her family and nation.

Having completed her secondary education, Onusiriuka has also received accolades such as the Peace Achievers International Award for Sports Personality of the Year and recognition at the Women Power Conference in 2021. She’s celebrated as an Outstanding Gymnastics Child Athlete. Currently training as a member of the UK Gymnastics Club and Leeds Gymnastics, Onusiriuka’s talents have not gone unnoticed by prominent figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who lauded her contributions to the sport and the joy she has brought to Nigeria.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, has recognized Onusiriuka as an elite athlete, expressing the commitment to include her in future elite plans and preparations. He discussed the potential for her to shine in upcoming events, highlighting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympics as key opportunities for Onusiriuka to secure a medal. He emphasized, “Gymnastics is a sport that peaks at an early age. These next few years are crucial. With her turning 18 by 2028, we are targeting her to bring us success on the Olympic podium.”

Despite her remarkable achievements, Onusiriuka’s path has not been without challenges, particularly due to issues such as inadequate facilities and funding for gymnastics in Nigeria. However, her resilience shines through. Training relentlessly and competing with determination, she persists despite the lack of resources available in comparison to her international counterparts. The Nigerian government, in partnership with private sponsors, has recognized her potential, stepping in to provide financial and logistical support that not only invests in her future but also in the growth of gymnastics in Nigeria.

Stephanie Onusiriuka’s journey is a testament to her extraordinary talent, dedication, and resilience. As she eyes the 2028 Olympics, she continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations of Nigerian athletes.
