In a concerted effort to uphold public health and environmental standards, the Lagos State Government has intensified its crackdown on illegal public toilets operating without proper authorization. These facilities have been found to discharge untreated sewage into public drains and waterways, posing significant health risks to residents.

On January 24, 2025, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) sealed off several facilities, including a public toilet under the bridge at Leventis Bus-Stop, Apongbon, for discharging untreated sewage into the Lagoon and for the illegal construction of the public toilet. Additionally, Ebute-Ero Market Block N was sealed for channeling sewage pipes into public drains and constructing a septic tank on a walkway.

These actions underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining a sustainable environment, proper sanitation, and public health safety in line with the Environmental Management and Protection Law (EMPL) 2017. The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards environmental pollution and degradation.

The LSWMO has also resealed the Optimum Exposure Media Control Room for the deliberate discharge of untreated sewage into the Lagoon and other environmental violations. These enforcement actions are part of a broader initiative to create a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for all residents.

Residents are urged to adopt proper hygiene practices to enhance public health and contribute to environmental sustainability. The Lagos State Government continues to monitor and enforce environmental regulations to ensure the well-being of its citizens.
