Rev. Fr. John Ubaechu, the parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church in Izombe, Imo State, has regained his freedom after being kidnapped on March 23, 2025. He was abducted along Ejemekwuru Road while traveling to Owerri for the annual retreat of priests in the Owerri Archdiocese. His release was confirmed by the Owerri Archdiocesan Catholic Secretariat, which expressed gratitude for his safe return and thanked the public for their prayers.
Reports indicated that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N20 million for Fr. Ubaechu’s release. However, the statement confirming his freedom did not disclose whether any ransom was paid. Security agencies have not yet provided details on how he was rescued or whether negotiations played a role in securing his release.
The area where Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped has been plagued by similar incidents in the past. In May 2023, another Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathias Opara, was also abducted in the same region. The recurring attacks have raised concerns among residents, who have urged the Imo State Government and security agencies to take decisive action against rising insecurity in the area.
His abduction adds to the growing list of targeted kidnappings of clergy members in Nigeria. Religious leaders and community groups have continued to call for enhanced security measures to protect citizens, particularly along highways notorious for such incidents. The Catholic Church has reiterated its commitment to advocating for justice and urging authorities to address the worsening security situation.
