In a remarkable tribute to one of Nigeria’s most celebrated athletes, the Ogun State government has announced plans to construct a new indoor boxing ring in honor of Anthony Joshua. Governor Dapo Abiodun made this announcement during a recent visit by the two-time former world heavyweight boxing champion to his office.
Governor Abiodun expressed his pride in Joshua’s achievements on the global stage and revealed that the new boxing ring would be located in a stadium in Abeokuta. This initiative aims to encourage Joshua to visit his home state more frequently and contribute to the development of sports in the region.
In addition to the boxing ring, the governor also announced that Joshua would be lighting the National Sports Festival torch in May 2025. Furthermore, Joshua has been officially confirmed as Ogun State’s sports ambassador and will be receiving a brand new house in Sagamu as a token of appreciation for his contributions to sports.
Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of sports as a universal language that brings people together and highlighted the state’s commitment to refurbishing and reconstructing its sporting facilities in preparation for the upcoming sports festival. He urged Joshua to collaborate with the National Sports Commission and the Commissioner for Sports Development to ensure the success of the festival and promote sports development in Ogun State.
Joshua, in his remarks, expressed his willingness to support the state’s sports initiatives and promote Ogun to the rest of the world by showcasing the numerous talents in the region.
