In recent days, Ibadan has witnessed a series of unfortunate incidents, including a tragic road accident and a significant fire outbreak, both leading to loss of lives and property.
On Monday, February 24, 2025, a fatal accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the Ayetoro area on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number UYY 165 ZY and a stationary truck registered as DKA 244 XC. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the bus driver, possibly due to excessive speed and fatigue, lost control and collided with the stationary truck. The accident resulted in the deaths of nine individuals—six men and three women—while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured were transported to Famobis Hospital in Mowe for medical attention, and the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue in Sagamu. FRSC officials have expressed concern over drivers’ negligence regarding speed limits and the necessity of rest periods during long journeys.
In a separate incident, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, a fire broke out at an MTN booster station located beside the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Ibadan. The blaze, which started around 4:00 a.m., was attributed to an electrical surge affecting the Mikano generator and associated equipment. The Oyo State Fire Service, in collaboration with the university’s fire marshals, responded promptly to the emergency call and successfully extinguished the fire, preventing further damage. No casualties were reported in this incident.
These events highlight the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent such tragedies. Drivers are urged to maintain appropriate speed limits and take regular breaks to combat fatigue, especially on major highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspection of electrical installations are essential to prevent fire outbreaks, particularly in facilities housing sensitive equipment.
The local authorities in Ibadan are intensifying efforts to enhance public safety. The FRSC continues to educate drivers on safe driving practices, emphasizing the dangers of speeding and driver fatigue. Meanwhile, the Oyo State Fire Service is conducting inspections and awareness campaigns to ensure that organizations comply with safety standards, aiming to reduce the occurrence of fire-related incidents.
The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any safety hazards to the appropriate authorities promptly. Collective responsibility and adherence to safety measures are vital in preventing accidents and safeguarding lives and property in Ibadan.
