On February 27, 2025, Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, declared his return to office, asserting, “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.”
Obasa’s return to the Assembly complex was marked by a significant security presence, including armed police officers and operatives from the State Security Service (SSS). This move comes after his impeachment on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.
In his absence, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. However, Obasa’s recent actions have intensified the leadership crisis within the Assembly. Notably, security details assigned to Speaker Meranda were reportedly withdrawn prior to Obasa’s return, raising concerns about her safety and the stability of the Assembly’s leadership.
Addressing journalists, Obasa dismissed his impeachment as “undemocratic and unconstitutional,” emphasizing the need for due process in such proceedings. He stated, “Impeachment or removal of a speaker is a democratic process and constitutional. If you want to do that, you must follow due process.”
The situation has led to a polarized atmosphere within the Assembly. While Obasa maintains his position as Speaker, a faction of lawmakers continues to support Meranda’s leadership. The unfolding events underscore the escalating tensions and the urgent need for resolution to restore order and confidence in the legislative body’s operations.
