Ghana Learnt From Nigeria In Having Credible General Elections INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

The Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has commended Ghana for adopting lessons from Nigeria to ensure credible and transparent general elections. Speaking at an international electoral forum held in Accra, Yakubu highlighted the shared experiences of both nations in electoral processes and the collaborative efforts that have fostered mutual growth in electoral integrity.

Professor Yakubu emphasized that Nigeria’s advancements in election management, particularly through the use of technology and innovative practices, have served as a reference point for Ghana. He noted that the deployment of electronic transmission of results, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and the introduction of rigorous voter education campaigns have significantly influenced Ghana’s electoral reforms. These measures, according to Yakubu, have contributed to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across Africa.

The INEC Chairman also acknowledged Ghana’s successful conduct of its most recent general elections, which were widely regarded as transparent and peaceful. He praised the Ghanaian Electoral Commission for its efforts to uphold democratic principles, citing the peaceful transfer of power as a testament to the maturity of Ghana’s political system. Yakubu noted that such developments inspire confidence in the democratic process not just in Ghana, but across the African continent.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by both countries, Yakubu stressed the importance of continued collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana to address electoral malpractices, voter apathy, and logistical challenges. He called for the strengthening of regional partnerships through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to further improve election administration in the region. According to him, sharing best practices and technical expertise remains key to deepening democracy in West Africa.

Yakubu’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria itself is reflecting on its electoral processes. The INEC Chairman acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in Nigeria’s elections, particularly in curbing voter intimidation, ensuring logistical efficiency, and enhancing the security of the electoral process. He expressed optimism that with sustained effort, Nigeria would continue to serve as a model for democratic progress in Africa.

The forum concluded with a joint declaration by electoral officials from Nigeria and Ghana, reaffirming their commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. As both nations continue to exchange ideas and strategies, the partnership between Nigeria and Ghana is expected to bolster democracy and strengthen political stability in the region.
