In a groundbreaking move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its plans to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the nation’s teaching and learning systems. This initiative aims to enhance educational outcomes and prepare students for a future dominated by technology.

During a ministerial briefing to commemorate the International Day of Education, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to transform education. Represented by the Ministry’s Director of Polytechnics, Dr. Ejeh Usman, Alausa highlighted the theme of this year’s celebration: “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

Alausa acknowledged the challenges of integrating AI but stressed its transformative potential. “As we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence, it is essential to prioritize human agency in education,” he said. “We must ensure AI complements, rather than replaces, the critical role of educators in shaping young minds. Our goal is to harness AI’s potential to enhance teaching and learning while preserving the unique qualities that make us human. This vision will empower students to thrive in an increasingly automated world.”

The government has already introduced several AI-driven tools for teachers and students, including:

  • Inspire: A platform that brings classrooms closer for students.
  • Ignite: A tool that assists teachers in creating lesson plans.
  • Tertiary Information System (TIS): A portal that digitizes undergraduate records for easier data access and management.
  • Nigeria Learning Passport: A digital platform offering free access to over 15,000 learning resources for primary, junior, and secondary school students nationwide.

Additionally, efforts are underway to automate the evaluation and accreditation of academic records to simplify administrative processes. Alausa reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with international partners, education professionals, and experts to align AI integration with global best practices. He also announced plans to establish an AI in Education Task Force to develop guidelines and standards for teacher training, ensuring educators are adequately equipped to adapt to this technological advancement.
