FCCPC Sues MultiChoice Nigeria, CEO John Ugbe Over Price Hike Violation.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has initiated legal proceedings against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, for allegedly violating regulatory directives and obstructing an ongoing investigation.

On February 27, 2025, the FCCPC directed MultiChoice Nigeria to maintain its existing pricing for DStv and GOtv services pending the conclusion of an investigation into the company’s proposed price hike. Despite this directive, MultiChoice implemented the price increase on March 1, 2025, prompting the FCCPC to file charges at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division.

The charges include willfully obstructing the Commission’s inquiry by implementing a price hike contrary to directives, impeding the ongoing investigation by ignoring instructions to suspend the hike, and attempting to mislead the Commission by proceeding with the increase without objection.

The FCCPC views MultiChoice’s actions as a deliberate attempt to undermine regulatory authority, disrupt market fairness, and deny Nigerian consumers the protection afforded under the law. The Commission is considering additional enforcement measures, including sanctions and penalties, to ensure compliance and accountability.
