Ex-Imo Commissioner Dr. Fabian Ihekweme Sues Police for Illegal Arrest, Detention

0

Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, a former Commissioner for Foreign Affairs in Imo State, has initiated a lawsuit against the Nigeria Police Force over his alleged illegal arrest and detention. Ihekweme was detained on November 27, 2024, following accusations of making seditious and inflammatory publications aimed at inciting civil unrest. His legal team claims that the arrest violated his fundamental human rights, as due process was not properly followed during the arrest and detention .

Ihekweme, who has become a prominent critic of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, alleges that the arrest was politically motivated. According to his counsel, the police acted on a petition filed by the Imo Democratic Alliance (IDA), a group believed to be aligned with the government. The lawsuit seeks damages for the harm caused to his reputation and a public apology from the police .

The police, however, have denied any wrongdoing. A spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command stated that the arrest was conducted lawfully, with a signed warrant obtained prior to his detention. They dismissed claims of a politically motivated action, insisting that the allegations against Ihekweme were serious and required investigation. The police also urged the public to disregard rumors that Ihekweme was abducted, labeling such claims as misinformation .

Critics have expressed concerns about the incident, citing it as an example of abuse of power and suppression of dissent in the state. Civil society organizations have called for an impartial investigation into the matter and for the protection of citizens’ rights, regardless of their political affiliations. Ihekweme’s supporters have also demanded transparency and accountability in the handling of his case .

The legal battle has drawn attention to broader issues of governance and human rights in Nigeria. As the case proceeds in court, many are watching closely to see if justice will prevail, with its outcome expected to set a precedent for addressing similar disputes in the future.
