An ex-convict recently pardoned by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been arrested for stealing a television set just eight days after his release. The suspect, identified as John Adeyemi, was granted amnesty as part of the governor’s effort to decongest prisons and offer reformed individuals a second chance at life.
The incident occurred in Osogbo, the state capital, where Adeyemi allegedly broke into a residence and stole the television. According to the Osun State Police Command, the suspect was apprehended after the property owner reported the theft. Adeyemi was found with the stolen item and confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions from the public. While some expressed disappointment at Adeyemi’s actions, others questioned the effectiveness of the pardon program in addressing the root causes of crime among ex-convicts. Critics argue that rehabilitation and reintegration programs must accompany amnesty to prevent repeat offenses.
Governor Adeleke’s administration had recently pardoned several inmates as part of a goodwill gesture to mark his one year in office. The program was aimed at giving deserving individuals a fresh start. However, incidents like Adeyemi’s have raised concerns about the criteria used for granting pardons and the need for closer post-release monitoring.
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that Adeyemi will face prosecution for the theft, adding that the case underscores the need for better mechanisms to support ex-convicts in their reintegration into society. Meanwhile, authorities are reviewing the pardon program to address potential lapses.
