Nigerian Man Promised Pardon After 10 Years on Death Row for Stealing Hens and Eggs

In a remarkable turn of events, Segun Olowookere, a Nigerian man who has spent the last decade on death row for stealing hens and eggs, is set to be pardoned. The announcement was made by Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, on December 20, 2024.

Olowookere’s ordeal began in 2010 when he was just 17 years old. Alongside an accomplice, Morakinyo Sunday, he was arrested for attacking the homes of a police officer and another individual using a wooden gun and a sword. Despite their armed attempt, they managed to escape with only poultry. In 2014, Justice Jide Falola of the Osun State High Court sentenced both men to death by hanging after finding them guilty of breaking into the police officer’s house and stealing his belongings.

The death sentence sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with many arguing that the punishment was disproportionately harsh for the crime committed. Following their sentencing, Olowookere and Sunday were transferred to Lagos State’s Kirikiri maximum security prison, where they have spent the last decade on death row.

Governor Adeleke’s decision to pardon Olowookere has been met with relief and support from human rights groups, Nigerians, and Olowookere’s parents, who have been advocating for his release. In a statement, Governor Adeleke emphasized the importance of justice and equity, stating, “Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.”

Olowookere is expected to be released in early 2025. However, the fate of Morakinyo Sunday remains unclear, as his name was not mentioned in the governor’s statement.
