Amnesty International has reported that 24 people were killed and more than 1,200 others detained during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria. The global human rights organization released the figures in a statement condemning the excessive use of force by security agencies against protesters.

According to Amnesty, the protests, which called for accountability and better governance, were met with violent crackdowns in several states. Security forces allegedly used live ammunition, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse crowds, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

The report also highlights cases of mass arrests, with detainees allegedly held without charge and denied access to legal representation. “The authorities must immediately release all those detained for peacefully exercising their right to protest,” Amnesty’s statement read.

Eyewitnesses and activists corroborated Amnesty’s findings, describing harrowing scenes of chaos and brutality. Videos shared on social media captured moments of panic as demonstrators fled from gunfire, sparking widespread outrage.

In response, the Nigerian government has denied accusations of excessive force, claiming that measures were taken to maintain public order. However, critics have called for an independent investigation into the events, urging accountability for the loss of lives.

The #EndBadGovernance protests mark yet another chapter in Nigeria’s struggle for human rights and better governance. Advocacy groups are demanding justice for victims while pushing for systemic reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
