Residents of Lekki Conservation Estate in Lagos State have recently protested against the persistent and unreliable power supply in their community. The demonstration, organized by the Lekki Conservation Estates Development Association (LECECODA), highlighted the adverse effects of frequent power outages on families and businesses in the area.

The protestors expressed frustration over the Eko Electricity Distribution Company’s (EKEDC) failure to address the power issues, despite numerous engagements over the past three years. They reported receiving less than two hours of electricity daily, with some areas experiencing total blackouts for over two years. LECECODA President, Osas Airen, emphasized the community’s need for a dedicated power line to ensure consistent electricity supply.

In response to the residents’ concerns, EKEDC announced the installation of a new transformer by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the 330/132/33kV Lekki Transmission Substation. This upgrade aims to enhance the substation’s capacity from 120MVA to 195MVA, thereby improving electricity distribution efficiency in the region. EKEDC assured that this development would lead to more reliable electricity with reduced outages and improved voltage stability for Lekki residents.

Despite EKEDC’s assurances, residents remain skeptical, citing years of unreliable service and unfulfilled promises. They continue to demand immediate action to address the power supply issues, emphasizing the critical need for a dedicated power line to meet the community’s growing energy demands.

The ongoing power supply challenges in Lekki underscore broader issues within Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector, where infrastructure deficits and management inefficiencies often lead to inconsistent service delivery. The residents’ protest highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to ensure reliable and sustainable power supply across the country.
