The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed reports alleging the discovery of $800 million, ₦700 billion in cash, and drugs worth ₦1 trillion at the residence of Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The commission described the reports, which gained traction on social media, as false and baseless, urging the public to disregard them.
In a statement released on December 5, 2024, the EFCC clarified that no such operation or discovery took place at any property linked to Bello El-Rufai. The agency emphasized its commitment to professional and transparent operations and warned against the spread of unverified information intended to mislead the public.
Bello El-Rufai also addressed the allegations, denying ownership of the residence where the supposed raid occurred. He clarified that his family home is in the Unguwar Sarki area of Kaduna and not at the alleged location. He criticized the claims as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation and link him to illegal activities.
The EFCC reaffirmed its focus on fighting corruption and ensuring credible investigations while maintaining the integrity of its work. It urged individuals and groups to avoid disseminating falsehoods that undermine its credibility and waste public resources.
Both Bello El-Rufai and the EFCC called on the public to verify information before sharing, stressing the importance of responsible communication in maintaining trust in institutions and individuals.
