Labour Party lawmakers representing Anambra State in the National Assembly have condemned the recent assault on corps member, Edema Jennifer Elohor, by operatives of the Agunechemba vigilante group. They described the incident as “heinous, cruel and criminal,” calling on the Anambra State government and the Nigeria Police to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The caucus, comprising two senators and five House of Representatives members, stressed that no lip service must be paid to the case, insisting on a comprehensive investigation and transparent prosecution. They urged that the police take full control of the matter from the local vigilante outfit to restore public confidence in the rule of law.
Their stance echoes similar calls from Senator Ede Dafinone, the NYSC Directorate, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the National Association of Nigerian Students, all of whom have demanded swift prosecution, protection for corps members, and compensation for the victim. Stakeholders say the case presents an opportunity for authorities to demonstrate a genuine commitment to justice and the safety of young Nigerians serving under the NYSC scheme.
