Education and Early Aviation Career

Captain Ogoyi began her aviation journey after rigorous pilot training, earning her stripes as a First Officer with Arik Air. Her dedication and skill on the flight deck quickly caught the attention of senior colleagues.

Rise to Captaincy

In September 2021, Oluranti made history in her own right by earning promotion to full Captain at Arik Air. Her captaincy ceremony was graced by industry leaders, including Captain Roy Ilegbodu, Captain Adetokunbo Adekunbi, and Captain Chris Najomo (now NCAA Director-General).

Transition to ValueJet

Seeking fresh challenges, Captain Ogoyi joined ValueJet, one of Nigeria’s rising domestic airlines. She became one of their most respected female captains, known for precision, calm under pressure, and impeccable safety records—qualities that would be tested in an unexpected way.

The KWAM 1 Incident (August 5, 2025)

On a scheduled Abuja–Lagos ValueJet flight, a confrontation broke out when Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde “KWAM 1” attempted to board carrying a flask suspected of containing alcohol. When crew requested checks, he allegedly resisted and at one point splashed liquid on the captain and crew.

Prioritising safety, Captain Ogoyi closed the aircraft door and delayed departure until the matter was addressed. However, NCAA later suspended both her and her co-pilot, citing claims of taxiing without full clearance—a decision that sparked industry debate.

On August 13, 2025, the Federal Government ordered that the pilots be reinstated after one month of suspension and re-appraisal, alongside a reduction of KWAM 1’s flight ban.

Legacy and Professional Image

Captain Oluranti Ogoyi stands as a role model for women in aviation, balancing professional excellence with the courage to uphold safety protocols under pressure. Her career journey is a testament to resilience, discipline, and the growing presence of women in Nigeria’s skies.
