Bill Gates to Visit Nigeria, Pledges $200B for Health and Development

Bill Gates, Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is set to visit Nigeria this week as part of a broader African tour aimed at advancing health and development goals. His visit comes after a monumental $200 billion commitment announced at the African Union House in Ethiopia, which will be invested over the next two decades to combat maternal and infant mortality, eradicate preventable diseases, and lift millions out of poverty.

During his stay, Gates will meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss reforms in Nigeria’s primary healthcare system. His foundation has long supported initiatives to improve healthcare infrastructure, and this visit is expected to reinforce those efforts.

Gates will also participate in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, an extension of his foundation’s global platform that tracks progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event will highlight Africa’s strides in science and technology, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and health innovation. Gates is expected to engage with local scientists and partners deploying AI to expand access to healthcare solutions.

This marks Gates’ return to Nigeria after his last visit in 2018, when he urged leaders to prioritize investments in human capital, education, and healthcare as critical elements for long-term national prosperity. His continued commitment underscores the importance of innovation and collaboration in driving sustainable development.
