ASUU Begins Two-Week Warning Strike Over Unresolved Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially commenced a two-week warning strike across Nigeria starting Monday, October 13, 2025. The decision follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over unresolved issues concerning university funding, staff welfare, and the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement2.

ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced the strike during a press briefing at the University of Abuja, stating that the action was necessary to compel the government to honor its commitments. Despite recent negotiations and the release of ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances, ASUU maintains that no substantial progress has been made3.

The Federal Government has responded with a warning that the “No Work, No Pay” policy will be enforced during the strike period, a move that has drawn criticism from academic staff and education advocates5.

ASUU emphasized that the strike is a warning and may escalate if the government fails to meet its demands. Students across public universities are once again facing disruptions in their academic calendar, reigniting concerns about the long-term impact of recurring industrial actions on Nigeria’s higher education system.
