Airtel Raises Data and Call Rates Following Tariff Adjustment.

0

Airtel Nigeria has announced a hike in its data and call tariffs, citing rising operational costs and economic pressures. The adjustment, which takes effect immediately, reflects the broader trend in the telecom sector as companies respond to increased inflation and regulatory changes. This move follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) recent approval of a tariff review for telecom operators.

Under the new pricing structure, data plans have seen significant increases. For instance, the ₦1,200 plan, which previously offered 1.5GB, now costs ₦2,000 for 3GB, while the ₦2,500 plan now provides 4GB instead of 3GB. Monthly plans have also been adjusted, with the 10GB plan now costing ₦4,000, up from ₦2,500. Similarly, voice call rates have increased from 18 kobo per second to 25 kobo per second, impacting customers who rely on regular calls for communication.

Subscribers have expressed mixed reactions to the tariff hike. While some understand the economic challenges facing telecom companies, others feel burdened by the rising cost of essential services. Many users have taken to social media to voice their concerns, calling for government intervention to regulate prices and ensure affordability. Some also worry that the increase could make internet access less accessible for low-income earners.

Airtel has assured customers that the price adjustment is necessary to maintain service quality and expand network coverage. In a statement, the company emphasized its commitment to providing reliable connectivity despite the economic challenges. The telecom giant also highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure and technology to improve user experience across Nigeria.

Industry analysts predict that other telecom providers, including MTN and Glo, may follow Airtel’s lead in adjusting their tariffs. With inflation and rising costs affecting multiple sectors, the telecom industry faces increasing pressure to balance profitability with affordability. The NCC is expected to continue monitoring the situation to ensure fair pricing and consumer protection.
