How I Achieved My Dream of Becoming an American Judge – Nigerian woman, Abayomi Ajaiyeoba.

My journey to becoming an American judge has been one of resilience, dedication, and a deep commitment to justice. Born in Nigeria, I immigrated to the United States at the age of six. Growing up, I was inspired by my grandfather, a respected magistrate judge and chief in Nigeria, whose values of fairness and leadership shaped my early aspirations. My father, a dedicated nurse, and my mother, an educator and children’s rights advocate, further instilled in me the importance of service and standing up for others.

Initially, my career path began in social work, where I worked closely with communities, advocating for those in need. However, my passion for justice led me to pursue a legal career. I earned my law degree from Rutgers Law School, marking the beginning of a journey that would bring me face-to-face with some of the most complex legal challenges.

In 2009, I established my own law practice, specializing in bankruptcy, real estate, contracts, small claims, and family law. Over the years, I had the opportunity to represent a diverse range of clients, handling cases in civil rights, restorative justice, and community development. My work later took me to the New York City Fire Department, where I served as a legal enforcement attorney, ensuring compliance and upholding legal standards.

After years of dedication to the legal profession, I was honored to be inducted as a judge of the Kings County Civil Court in New York in January 2025. The ceremony was a deeply emotional moment, as it brought together my Nigerian heritage and my American achievements. Family members traveled from Nigeria, Canada, Kansas, and Maryland to witness this milestone, and the event was filled with traditional music, dance, and attire—celebrating the rich culture that has always been a part of my identity.

As a judge, my vision is clear: I want every person who enters my courtroom to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. Justice should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. My journey from Nigeria to the American judiciary has not been easy, but it has been incredibly fulfilling. It is proof that perseverance, education, and a commitment to service can lead to remarkable achievements.
