On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Nigerian workers gathered at Eagle Square in Abuja to commemorate International Workers’ Day, joining millions worldwide in celebrating labor solidarity and advocating for improved working conditions. The event, organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), featured colorful displays representing various professions, as well as cultural performances and speeches from union leaders.
Security was notably tight at the venue, with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) stationed at entry points and within the square to ensure a peaceful celebration.
During the rally, labor leaders Joe Ajaero (NLC) and Festus Osifo (TUC) addressed pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers. They called on the Federal Government to reverse the suspension of the Rivers State government, deeming it unconstitutional. Additionally, they demanded the withdrawal of proposed tax bills in the National Assembly, arguing that these bills unfairly target workers while exempting the wealthy and corporations.
The unions also highlighted concerns over rising telecommunication tariffs, urging a reduction from 50% to 35%. They advocated for immediate salary adjustments to match current economic realities, prompt payment of all arrears, and the restoration of gratuity payments. Furthermore, they called for raising the retirement age and adjusting pensions to account for inflation.
While the presence of President Bola Tinubu or Vice President Kashim Shettima at the event was uncertain, the rally proceeded with a strong turnout of workers and union representatives, underscoring the resilience and unity of the Nigerian workforce amid ongoing economic challenges.
