This week’s spotlight shines on one of Nollywood’s most beloved actors, Nkem Owoh, affectionately known as “Osuofia.” With a career spanning several decades, Nkem Owoh’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry are nothing short of legendary.

Early Life and Education

Born on February 7, 1955, in Amagu, Udi Town, Enugu State, Nigeria, Nkem Owoh developed a passion for the performing arts from a young age. After completing his primary and secondary education in Nsukka, he pursued engineering at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. However, it was clear that his heart truly belonged to acting and entertainment.

Career Beginnings

Nkem Owoh’s journey in the entertainment industry began in the late 1970s when he joined the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) as a writer. His talent for writing was evident as he contributed to notable productions like The New Masquerade and Basi and Company. His breakthrough moment came when he filled in for an absent actor and played the role of a drunkard in The New Masquerade, launching his successful acting career.

Rise to Fame

Nkem Owoh’s rise to fame was marked by his captivating performances in Igbo language films. He gained widespread recognition with his role in the movie Living in Bondage, and his subsequent performance as a customs officer in Circle of Doom further solidified his reputation. His portrayal of Osuofia, a humorous and lovable character, in the iconic film Osuofia in London and its sequel Osuofia in London 2 earned him international acclaim and cemented his place as a household name.

Notable Works and Achievements

Throughout his illustrious career, Nkem Owoh has appeared in numerous films, showcasing his versatility and comedic brilliance. Some of his notable works include Stronger than Pain, The Master, Ukwa, Police Officer, Spanner Goes to Jail, and Lionheart. His performance in Stronger than Pain earned him the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2008.

Personal Life and Legacy

Nkem Owoh is married to Ngozi Nkem Owoh, and the couple has two daughters. Despite his fame, Owoh prefers to keep his family life private. Tragically, he lost one of his daughters in June 2023, a loss that deeply affected him and his family.
