Tunde Onakoya Sets New Guinness World Record with 64-Hour Chess Marathon.

Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya has officially broken the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, completing an impressive 64 hours of continuous play. The feat was achieved alongside American chess champion Shawn Martinez in Times Square, New York City, and has been formally recognized by Guinness World Records. 

This achievement surpasses the previous record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds set by Norwegian duo Askild Bryn and Odin Blikra Vea. Onakoya’s marathon began on Thursday, April 17, and concluded on Sunday, April 20, 2025. Throughout the event, he received support from Nigerians worldwide, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Afrobeats stars Davido and Adekunle Gold. 

The chess marathon was more than a record-breaking endeavor; it was a mission to raise $1 million for Chess in Slums Africa, Onakoya’s initiative aimed at providing education to underprivileged children across Africa. The funds will contribute to building the largest tuition-free school for vulnerable children in Nigeria. 

Onakoya’s journey from learning chess in a Lagos barber shop to setting a world record in New York exemplifies resilience and dedication. His story continues to inspire many, highlighting the transformative power of education and community support.
