Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has revealed that being called the “Queen of Afrobeats” makes her uncomfortable. Speaking in a recent interview, the award-winning singer explained that while she appreciates the recognition, she does not accept the title because it carries pressure and expectations she would rather not embrace.
Tiwa noted that she isn’t the only female artist pushing boundaries in the genre, stressing that “there are a lot of us that are Queens.” She added that personally, the tag feels unnecessary and burdensome. “If I start accepting it, then I have to live with that responsibility every time. It doesn’t make sense to me, so I don’t accept it. But I appreciate it,” she said.
Her remarks highlight the growing conversation around representation in Afrobeats, as more female artists continue to dominate the global stage and challenge the idea of single ownership of the genre’s crown.
