President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Citing prolonged political instability, governance paralysis, and escalating security threats, the President announced the immediate suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.
In his address, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the state’s situation, noting that previous mediation efforts had failed. He highlighted the demolition of the State House of Assembly in December 2023, which remains unrebuilt fourteen months later, as a significant contributor to the governance standstill. Additionally, recent security reports indicated disturbing incidents of pipeline vandalization by militants, further exacerbating the crisis.
The President emphasized that these extraordinary measures are necessary to restore peace, order, and effective governance in Rivers State. He assured citizens that the federal government is committed to safeguarding the interests of the state’s residents during this period.
The nationwide broadcast was aired at 7 PM on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN). In his address, President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to upholding constitutional order and ensuring stability across all states. He urged all political actors in Rivers State to prioritize dialogue over conflict, emphasizing that any action threatening national unity would not be tolerated. The President also assured Nigerians that the federal government is closely monitoring the situation and would take further measures if necessary to maintain peace and security.
