Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, received a grand reception at the Presidential Villa following their historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship win. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced a generous reward of $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for each coach and technical staff member, and a three-bedroom flat in the Federal Capital Territory for all team members.
In addition to the financial and housing gifts, the President conferred upon all players and staff the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)—one of the country’s highest civilian awards. The event was held in Abuja and attended by notable dignitaries including First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.
The recognition follows D’Tigress’ impressive performance at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, where they claimed their seventh overall title and cemented Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball.
This state reception mirrors the recent honour given to the Super Falcons for their 10th WAFCON title, signaling the administration’s commitment to celebrating women’s sports excellence. President Tinubu praised D’Tigress not only for their victory but for inspiring the next generation of athletes and projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage.
