Nigerian singer and Grammy Award winner Tems has unveiled a new initiative aimed at empowering young African women in the music industry. Called the Leading Vibe Academy, the program is designed to equip aspiring female artists, songwriters, and producers with practical skills, mentorship, and opportunities that are often lacking in the male-dominated music space. Tems said the initiative is rooted in her own experiences as a self-taught artist navigating a challenging industry landscape.
The inaugural edition of the academy is set to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from August 8 to 9, and is open to women aged 18 to 35. Applications are already open and will close on July 13, 2025. Participants will engage in intensive workshops, production tutorials, industry panels, and networking sessions. The program is being supported by global music partners, including Native Instruments, and is expected to serve as a launchpad for rising female talent.
Tems highlighted the importance of gender equity in music, noting that globally, women make up only a small fraction of producers and decision-makers in the industry. “The Leading Vibe Academy is more than a school—it’s a safe space and a movement,” she said. By investing in young African women, the initiative aims to create a ripple effect that challenges stereotypes and opens doors for future generations of artists.
While the academy begins in Nigeria, Tems expressed her vision to expand the program across Africa and beyond, creating a continental network of empowered women in music. The launch has been widely praised, with fans and industry figures commending Tems for using her platform to uplift others. Applications are available online, and the academy’s first cohort is expected to set a strong precedent for what could become a lasting legacy.
