SDP Expels El-Rufai, Slaps 30-Year Ban Over Alleged Deception and Party Destabilization

In a dramatic political twist, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and banned him from any association with the party for 30 years. The decision, announced by the party’s National Working Committee, follows allegations that El-Rufai falsely claimed membership, forged documents, and attempted to destabilize the party’s internal structure. According to SDP officials, El-Rufai never registered at his ward level as required by the party’s constitution, yet publicly declared on social media that he had joined the party. He allegedly posed for photographs with suspended party leaders and circulated fake membership records to reinforce his claim. The SDP also accused him of aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and trying to drag the SDP into an unauthorized political coalition. The party stated that El-Rufai’s actions violated its constitution and core principles, prompting the unprecedented 30-year ban. Effective immediately, El-Rufai is prohibited from applying for membership, using the party’s name or insignia, or participating in any SDP-related activities. The party has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and warned members against associating with him. This move marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, as El-Rufai, once a key figure in the ruling APC, now finds himself politically isolated amid growing opposition realignments.
