Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has extended a significant gesture of compassion to victims of the recent Plateau State attacks by donating ₦1 billion through her humanitarian platform, the Renewed Hope Initiative. During a visit to Jos on July 3, 2025, she emphasized that the funds were not sourced from government allocations but were independently mobilized to support those directly affected by the wave of violence that has plagued the region. Speaking during a solemn event at the Government House in Rayfield, she expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property, noting that her intervention was motivated purely by empathy and a desire to ease the suffering of women, children, and families left in distress.

In addition to the financial donation, Senator Tinubu distributed 1,800 bags of rice and other essential food items to displaced residents. Addressing the gathering, she stated, “I came here not as a politician, but as a mother whose heart bleeds every time I hear of killings. This is about humanity, not politics.” She also called on men in the affected communities to step up and protect women and children, while urging traditional leaders and youth to be champions of peace and unity across Plateau State.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang welcomed the First Lady’s gesture, describing it as both timely and deeply impactful. He assured the public that the donation would be transparently managed and disbursed to directly benefit victims and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring lasting peace and security in Plateau, expressing hope that the First Lady’s intervention would inspire more support from the private sector and civil society.

During her visit, Mrs. Tinubu met with survivors and families of the victims, offering words of comfort and encouragement. Many residents described the visit as a moment of hope amid despair. Women and children, some of whom had lost their homes and loved ones in the attacks, received food items and emotional support as part of the Renewed Hope outreach. “It’s not just the money, it’s her presence here that speaks volumes,” one local woman said, fighting back tears.

The First Lady also used the platform to stress the importance of unity across ethnic and religious lines. She cautioned against politicizing violence and challenged community leaders to take ownership of peace-building efforts. “Our diversity should be our strength, not a source of conflict,” she added. She concluded her address by promising that Plateau would remain in her prayers and that this would not be a one-off effort, but part of a sustained commitment to the wellbeing of vulnerable Nigerians.

This act of humanitarian support has drawn praise nationwide, with many describing it as a powerful example of empathy and leadership. As Plateau continues to heal from its wounds, the First Lady’s visit and donation serve as a reminder that national unity and compassion must remain at the heart of Nigeria’s collective progress.
