Seventeen-year-old Alabi Quadri, who gained national attention in 2023 for standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy, has been released from detention after spending nearly three months in custody. He was discharged on Thursday, April 17, 2025, by Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi at the Apapa Magistrate Court in Lagos, following legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which found no evidence linking him to the alleged crime.
Quadri’s ordeal began in January 2025 when he was reportedly abducted near his home by local enforcers, known as “Area Boys,” who were allegedly resentful over donations he received after his viral encounter with Obi. These individuals handed him over to the Amukoko Police Division, accusing him of armed robbery. He was subsequently arraigned alongside four adults he did not know, with his age falsely recorded as 18, leading to his detention at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who took up Quadri’s case, condemned the actions of the police and demanded accountability. Effiong called for the removal and disciplinary action against the Divisional Police Officer of Amukoko Division and other officers involved. He also demanded a public apology and ₦100 million in compensation for Quadri, citing the psychological trauma and injustice he endured.
Upon his release, Quadri expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support but revealed that he and his family are now facing threats and are in need of assistance. He appealed for help with safe accommodation and financial support to return to school. His lawyer emphasized the need for rehabilitation and support to help Quadri rebuild his life after the unjust detention.
