Peter Obi Joins Global Leaders in Rome to Honour Late Pope Francis.

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, joined global dignitaries at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to pay his final respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025. The solemn lying-in-state ceremony was attended by thousands of mourners, including Francis Cardinal Arinze and other international figures.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, Obi described Pope Francis as “a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference.” He emphasized the Pope’s embodiment of humility, simplicity, and selfless service, stating that his life was a testament to leadership rooted in compassion, truth, and service to the marginalized.

Obi also reflected on his personal connection to the Pope, noting his membership in Scholas Occurrentes, an international organization founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. This group focuses on promoting truth, ethical leadership, and social transformation. Obi recounted meeting the Pope on three occasions, each leaving a lasting impression due to the Pontiff’s peaceful demeanor and inspiring presence.

He concluded his tribute by urging leaders, especially across Africa, to emulate Pope Francis’s values of justice, peace, and human dignity, and to lead with conscience and love.

The passing of Pope Francis has prompted an outpouring of condolences from world leaders and notable Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, all of whom have lauded the Pope’s commitment to peace, justice, and service to humanity.
