Gospel singer Osinachi’s husband sentenced to death by hanging.

Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the verdict on Monday, April 28, 2025, after finding Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with his wife’s death on April 8, 2022 .

The court determined that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that Nwachukwu’s actions directly led to Osinachi’s death. The prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, and submitted 25 documents as evidence. The defense called five witnesses, including Nwachukwu, and tendered four exhibits .

In addition to the death sentence for the homicide charge, Nwachukwu received various prison terms for other offenses, such as emotional abuse and domestic violence. These sentences range from six months to three years, to be served concurrently. He was also fined N500,000 and N200,000 on two separate counts .

Osinachi Nwachukwu was a renowned gospel singer, best known for her hit song “Ekwueme.” Her death initially was attributed to throat cancer, but subsequent reports and testimonies revealed a history of domestic abuse, leading to her husband’s arrest and trial.

This case has drawn significant public attention and sparked discussions on domestic violence in Nigeria. The court’s verdict is seen by many as a landmark decision in the fight against domestic abuse and the protection of victims’ rights.
