The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has refuted claims that it is courting former President Goodluck Jonathan to be its presidential candidate for the 2027 election. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, clarified that the party has not extended such an invitation to Jonathan.
Abdullahi explained that during an interview, he was asked about Jonathan’s potential candidacy. He responded by affirming Jonathan’s constitutional eligibility to run, noting that he has one term remaining. However, Abdullahi emphasized that this was a general statement about eligibility, not an indication of the party’s intentions.
He further stated that the PDP has not approached Jonathan regarding the 2027 presidential race. Abdullahi highlighted that the party boasts 12 governors and numerous prominent politicians who are qualified and capable of contesting the presidency.
Addressing rumors about Jonathan’s interest in returning to the presidency, Abdullahi referenced a statement from Jonathan’s wife, asserting that he has no plans to run again. He questioned the basis for speculations about Jonathan’s candidacy, given this stance.
In summary, the PDP has made it clear that it is not seeking to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election, reaffirming its confidence in its current members’ capabilities.
