Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, a UK-based cleric, has refuted recent remarks by British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch concerning Nigeria. In a statement on December 16, 2024, Adegboyega highlighted that between 2023 and 2024, approximately 78,000 bags and phones were snatched in the UK, underscoring that societal challenges are not unique to Nigeria.

Adegboyega emphasized the significant contributions of the Nigerian black community in the UK, noting their efforts in supporting leaders like Badenoch to attain prominent positions. He stated, “For people like the leader of the opposition you just mentioned to get to that position, they’ve been fighting on the street.”

Addressing Badenoch’s portrayal of Nigeria, Adegboyega contended that the situation is not as dire as depicted. He acknowledged existing issues but reminded that Nigeria is a relatively young nation compared to advanced economies like Britain. He remarked, “We are not denying the fact that our country has issues… But we cannot say things are all dark because it’s not true.”

Furthermore, Adegboyega pointed out systemic challenges within the UK, mentioning that prisons and mental health institutions have a disproportionate number of young black individuals compared to educational institutions. This observation aims to provide a balanced perspective on societal issues in both countries.

These comments come in response to Badenoch’s earlier statements, where she expressed a stronger identification with her Yoruba heritage over a broader Nigerian identity, and noted a lack of commonality with northern Nigeria. Adegboyega’s rebuttal seeks to highlight the complexities and shared challenges present in both Nigerian and British societies.
