Pascal Gabriel Dozie, the founder of the defunct Diamond Bank Plc and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 85. He died on April 8, 2025, just one day shy of his 86th birthday, after reportedly battling an age-related illness, according to family sources.

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, Dozie was a towering figure in the country’s financial and telecommunications sectors. He founded Diamond Bank in 1990 and led the institution as CEO until 2006, when he handed over the reins to his son, Uzoma Dozie. Under his leadership, the bank grew into one of Nigeria’s most reputable financial institutions before eventually merging with Access Bank.

Beyond his achievements in banking, Dozie was also a pioneer in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. He served as a major shareholder and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, where he played a crucial role in the company’s successful establishment and expansion across the country.

In recognition of his immense contributions to Nigeria’s economic development, Pascal Dozie received several national honors, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

He is survived by his wife, Chinyere Dozie, and their five children. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian business, as he leaves behind a legacy of innovation, resilience, and visionary leadership.
