Olamide Latifat Mohammed: Weaving Culture, Empowerment & Modernity Through BolamsAsooke

This article was first published on The Brief Network

Asooke isn’t just fabric, it’s a legacy, and Olamide Latifat Mohammed, the founder of BolamsAsooke, is on a mission to ensure that legacy thrives in the modern world.

From transforming Asooke into versatile, everyday fashion to empowering the women behind its craftsmanship, Olamide is rewriting the narrative of African textiles. She’s not just running a brand, she’s preserving culture, fostering economic empowerment, and positioning Asooke on the global fashion map.

In this exclusive feature, she shares her remarkable journey, the challenges of merging tradition with innovation, and her bold vision for the future of African fashion.

The Journey to Building BolamsAsooke

Olamide’s love for Asooke wasn’t planned, it was deeply woven into her upbringing. Growing up, she watched her mother design and sell Asooke for the Ansarudeen and NASFAT Muslim Societies of Nigeria, as well as the grand Ojude Oba Festival. Her home was filled with artisans—widows, single mothers, and skilled weavers who turned simple threads into stunning masterpieces of tradition.

“Our home was always filled with women – weavers, widows, and single mothers – who wove their strength into every fabric. Watching them work, I saw more than just a business; I saw empowerment, tradition, and artistry.”

Despite this early exposure, she didn’t immediately envision a career in the fashion industry. However, as she grew older, she noticed a disconnect. It became obvious how young people saw Asooke as something exclusive to weddings and ceremonies. That needed to change.

With this growing misconception about Asooke,Olamide founded BolamsAsooke to challenge the perception that Asooke is only for special occasions. By reimagining the fabric with lighter textures, stylish cuts, and everyday versatility, she is proving that culture and contemporary fashion can coexist beautifully.

“There’s a misconception that Asooke is only for weddings and traditional events, but it’s so much more. We’re making it versatile—introducing modern cuts, lighter textures, and stylish designs that fit effortlessly into everyday wardrobes.”

Empowering the Women Behind the Fabric

Beyond fashion, BolamsAsooke is a movement, one that uplifts  and empowers the artisans who bring Asooke to life.

“It’s everything. Asooke is more than fabric, it’s a symbol of strength. The women behind it, many of whom face challenges, inspire me. By growing BolamsAsooke, I’m creating opportunities, preserving tradition, and ensuring their craft lives on.”

By investing in local artisans and ensuring sustainable employment, she’s changing lives one weave at a time.

Running a business that bridges heritage and contemporary fashion isn’t without challenges. One of the biggest being educating younger generations on the craftsmanship behind Asooke in an era of fast fashion.

“Many young people don’t understand the craftsmanship behind Asooke, and that’s why we focus on storytelling—so they connect with the heritage behind every piece.”

Despite the hurdles, she remains passionate and persistent. The most rewarding part? Seeing people embrace Asooke beyond ceremonies, incorporating it into their daily style.

Lessons From an Entrepreneurial Journey

Olamide has learned three key lessons from building BolamsAsooke:

“We’re expanding our RTW line so that Asooke can be effortlessly incorporated into everyday style. There’s so much more to come—stay tuned!”

For young women looking to start their own businesses, Olamide’s advice is simple but powerful:

Her personal mantra?
