The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Subomi and Wahab Okoya, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for questioning over alleged naira abuse. The brothers are expected to appear at the EFCC’s Lagos office on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 10 a.m.

This action follows a viral video showing the Okoya brothers spraying and flaunting bundles of N1,000 notes during a promotional clip for Raheem’s new song, “Credit Alert.” In the video, a police officer is seen holding stacks of naira notes, which the brothers then flung into the air.

Such acts are considered a violation of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the abuse of the national currency. The EFCC’s invitation underscores its commitment to enforcing this law.

In response to the public outcry, one of the brothers, Raheem Okoya, issued an apology via his social media account, stating, “To the Nigerian people, my actions were not intended to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support as I had no intention of raising such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”

Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force has detained the officer seen in the video for misconduct, emphasizing its stance against unethical behavior by its personnel.

This incident has reignited discussions on the enforcement of laws against naira abuse, particularly concerning high-profile individuals, and highlights the need for public awareness regarding the legal implications of such actions.
