Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has publicly criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its recent crackdown on naira abuse by celebrities. In an interview on Nollywood On Radio, Okanlawon expressed concern over the agency’s focus on entertainers, suggesting that this emphasis detracts from more pressing issues of systemic corruption in Nigeria.
Okanlawon acknowledged the importance of respecting national symbols like the naira, stating, “Because something is cultural does not make it right.” He emphasized the need for a cultural shift towards better maintenance and respect for national assets. However, he questioned the EFCC’s priorities, highlighting that while the agency targets entertainers for naira abuse, more significant corruption cases involving officials and institutions often go unaddressed.
The actor argued that the EFCC’s selective enforcement undermines public trust. He stated, “If every day we hear about corrupt officials, politicians, or organisations being brought down by the agency, we’d be more likely to trust that they’re acting in our best interest.” Okanlawon believes that consistent action against high-level corruption would lend credibility to the agency’s campaigns against practices like money spraying.
This critique comes amid a series of EFCC actions against public figures for naira abuse. Notably, TikTok influencers TobiNation and TDollar received six-month jail sentences, and businessman E-Money was detained over alleged currency abuse. Other celebrities, including Iyabo Ojo and AY Makun, have been invited by the commission for questioning related to similar allegations.
Okanlawon’s comments have sparked discussions about the EFCC’s enforcement strategies and the broader issue of corruption in Nigeria. Many agree that while promoting respect for the naira is essential, the agency’s efforts should be part of a more comprehensive approach to tackling corruption across all sectors.
