BREAKING: Oba Abimbola Owoade Crowned 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

In a historic ceremony held on April 5, 2025, Prince Abimbola Owoade was officially crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The event, which took place at Olivet Heights Baptist School in Oyo town, was attended by Governor Seyi Makinde, who formally presented the new monarch with the staff and instrument of office. Oba Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who reigned for over five decades before his passing in April 2022.

The coronation drew a large crowd of dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents who gathered to witness the official ascension of the new Alaafin. The atmosphere was celebratory, with cultural performances, chants, and royal displays reflecting the deep heritage of the Oyo Empire. Oba Owoade’s emergence follows months of anticipation and selection processes overseen by the Oyo Mesi and approved by the state government.

Security was visibly tight across Oyo town and surrounding areas, with heavy deployment of police and other security operatives to maintain order and ensure a smooth event. The coronation was not just a cultural milestone but also a symbol of stability and continuity in the traditional institution of the Yoruba people. Authorities praised the peaceful conduct of the ceremony and the turnout of well-wishers.

Oba Owoade, who hails from the Agunloye Ruling House, has pledged to uphold the legacy of his predecessors and foster development in Oyo Kingdom. His reign is expected to focus on unity, cultural preservation, and collaboration with government institutions to bring progress to the people of Oyo. As the 46th Alaafin takes the throne, the ancient city begins a new chapter in its rich royal history.
