An Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) student has filed a ₦15 million lawsuit against a classmate over a false rape allegation, sparking intense debate both on campus and across social media.
According to reports, on February 17, 2026, English Department student Adewale Adeola Adeife posted her colleague David’s phone number online, accusing him of rape after a disagreement over another case. The post led to harassment and threats against David. Adeife later apologized publicly, withdrew the claim, and her family sought forgiveness.
However, David’s lawyers are demanding ₦15 million in damages for emotional distress and reputational harm. The matter is now heading to court. Unverified reports suggest Adeife may have attempted suicide after David refused to drop the suit, though police have not confirmed this.
The case has ignited conversations about the trauma of false accusations, the importance of due process, and the need to balance justice for the wrongly accused with support for genuine survivors of sexual violence.
